THE POWER OF VERTICAL FARMING

Like my friends, I love to go out window shopping. Then, slowly my wallet seems to get lighter and my hands start to get heavier. We get super excited when we walk into a store like Ulta or Macy’s that has a 20% off or even a 65% off discount, especially on a day like Black Friday. Just like I like a good discount on my clothes, I love a good discount in my produce. Vertical farming offers us an economic benefit of producing more for less money. Vertical farming is the practice of plants growing on top of each other in containers or rows in stacked layers. In 2015, it became widely known to many companies to grow more crops in less space. Vertical farming is different and sustainable. Today, it is the future of Agriculture. We should all learn to adapt and implement this into our lives. Vertical farming provides an environmental benefit and social benefit by addressing food deserts, and an economic benefit by using less resources.

To begin with, vertical farming improves our environment by using sustainable and renewable technology. Growing up in a studio, my mother grew a small garden in the yard. She grew cherry tomatoes, serrano peppers, pequin peppers, hierbabuena, and epazote, a couple of mexican herbs, to name a few. The process of a simple garden at home can be a lot of work and time consuming for some. After I moved into an apartment with my family there was no space, so we turned to vertical farming. Vertical farming uses a modern idea of indoor farming to grow produce, also known as Controlled Environment Agriculture. This method gives us the access to control the plant's environment, water, nutrients, and other aspects. It is easier to start than a traditional garden and easier to maintain. Most vertical farms use aeroponics systems and coconut husks (certified organic) instead of soil. It is the same technology NASA uses to grow their food with only water and nutrients, zero soil. Research has found aeroponic systems grow plants three times faster and produce 30% more than traditional methods.

Every year there is more pollution in our world and in our air. Many of which is produced by our improvements in technology. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that one of the factors potentially contributing to the contamination many states had with Romaine Lettuce was the “use of irrigation canal water to dilute crop protection chemicals.” Not only is canal water available for everyone to use for irrigation but also for human uses. Sometimes these chemicals run-off into our canals affecting the food supply. Vertical farming permits the people to control its water supply from a closed loop which prevents any run-off. In addition, vertical farming is environmentally friendly for not using any harmful pesticides or chemicals like Roundup. Best of all, consumers would participate buying organic produce from these crops.

In addition to taking care of our environment, vertical farming is important to every place to produce fresh vegetables and fruits. 23.5 million people who live in food deserts lack the quality of nutrients and vitamins fresh crops can offer them. 85% urban areas are food deserts. Two years ago, my father was diagnosed with Hepatic Steatosis, also known as Fatty Liver Disease. There are more than 3 million cases of Fatty Liver Disease in the United States and it is becoming more and more common. This disease could also lead to obesity, 36% of United States population is considered obese. Narrowing it down, diseases like obesity happens because of the lack of good nutrients in the body. Vertical gardens provide the nutrients needed to be healthy and not get these diseases.

United States Bureau of Reclamation confirms that 0.5% of Earth’s water, is freshwater. Freshwater is precious, we need to preserve what we can. Vertical farming addresses this issue by using 90% less water. We can grow food without fossil fuels but we can not grow food without water. This shows that vertical garden not only saves us water, but as well as space.

Many families could start their own small vertical garden. The average family of four in California spends $100 on vegetables and fruits per week. Having a small vertical farm would save families money after investing in the infastruction. They would save about $75 per week with a vertical garden, that is $240 per month! Which is a better deal than you can get in any store. In conclusion, vertical farming is the future because it reduces pollution, reduces food deserts, provide nutritionist options, and helps conserve fresh water. Overall, there are many reasons why vertical farming is the future of agriculture. Now it’s the time to bring it to our own homes and schools.

ARGUE THIS

Syllogism Is the simplest form of logical argument

You have your given like proofs in Gemometry = Major Premise AND minor premise
There fore,

It's important to evualte syllogirm
1. if they are true
     No possession truth exsists.
the true, means factuable things in the world
     theres no faith
2. if they are valid
does the conclusion follow from the presis, does the premisis support the conclusion

example, all students in SMHS are nice people
lily is a student is smhs therefore she is a nice person

the problem is in the premisis: not everyone is nice,
and not factually variable, but the validity can be there

an instance of a form of reasoning in which a conclusion is drawn (whether validly or not) from two given or assumed propositions (premises), each of which shares a term with the conclusion, and shares a common or middle term not present in the conclusion (e.g., all dogs are animals; all animals have four legs; therefore all dogs have four legs )
A syllogism is a kind of logical argument that applies deductive reasoning to arrive at a conclusion based on two or more propositions that are asserted or assumed to be true. In a form, defined by Aristotle, from the combination of a general statement and a specific statement, a conclusion is deduced.

- deductive reasoning, going from a general idea to a specific idea or case
- spot the bad logic: once you start reading and finding, you will spot it easier

So During the month of December-January, I decided to create an insightful blog. I don't mean to waste your time, but can we think outside the box or get creative.

Look at this blog for more: The Crime to Be Insightful

MY WORD CLOUD REFLECTION

1. First, I texted some friends on social media and asked them politely to do me this favor.
2. I copied and pasted all my text messages in my gmail and emailed them to myself.
3. I created a google document to put them all together as I received the messages.
4. After gathering all the text together I attempted word cloud to form my cloud. At first it was difficult because it would not let me save the file.
5. Couple Days later I attempted again, and succeeded.
6. Final Result.

A WELDING GAL

TRYING TO WELD

Many students take the Ag Welding class to learn how to weld. To be able to weld, they have to learn the basics and have knowledge about the equipment before grabbing it. Having few guys, 5 to be precise, in my Ag Leadership class who have taken the Ag Welding I or Ag Welding II is a challenge. Most of them are usually working on making a stage, props, and such things we could use for the meeting. However, a couple of them, mess around or ditch the class.

With not many hands on deck to help with the job, a brave girl volunteered herself.
Taking initiative as a close friend of hers, I offered to learn and help her build the trophies from scratch. There was other things I could help with like making posters with the whole chapter team. However, I personally did not think they needed more than 8- 10 people to work on it. In addition, as the chapter reporter, an officer, I decided to bring forth my duty. I am suppose to help and expand my knowledge. I learned how to cut 13 FFA emblems with a Christmas tree inside with a laser light (not the proper term, I believe, I mean I did not take any of the classes before). The brave girl who stepped up and a team of other few girls joined her to sand down the cut metal to have nice medallions without any sharp edges. She cut out a 3 rectangular pieces from a rectangular tube. She sanded the edges and started to weld on the first trophy.

On Tuesday afternoon, 12.10.19, I wanted to finish the trophies in order to paint them the next day and have them ready by Thursday for the meeting. Mr. Guerra only had an hour after school. I had finished cutting the emblems, however I could not keep going without welding the parts together. I proposed the idea to myself and was determine to finish. He demonstrated how to weld the part together and we practiced for the first 20 minutes taking turns between Monica, Jessica, my sister, and I. I was glad they joined me. Eventually we got the welding done in time before Mr. Guerra left. Our trophies had a few flaws, but was exceptionally great. Being exposed to it for the first time and having determination produced an amazing product for the FFA joint meeting of the year.

MY LEARNING FALL AND RISE

The Heart of Certainty

Like anyone else, first day of back to high school is kind of boring in addition to the craziness of  homework. Any class you come in, it is expected to present yourself, create some type of name-tag, or just go over the syllabus. (The only interesting thing is the people around you)

As I entered my AP English class, I instantly felt that it was going to be boring, judging by the looks. First of all, it was 5th period and it was far from the cafeteria which meant I would have to get into the line to get lunch. It seemed really far away. Secondly, this English class was so distant from the crowds as well as it was one of the portable classrooms with an ordinary boring blue ramp.  As I entered the class, I was confused. Was this teacher really going to seat us like a college setting? All the seats were scattered facing the front of the class with a blank whiteboard and the only thing written was on the left which were the teacher's social media/ references.

As the teacher started talking and introduced himself, Dr. Preston, I got anxious to get out of the class. It was first day of school and most likely it was going to be introductions or syllabus to kill time because there was not much to do. Despite being the first day of school, Dr. Preston gave us a speech. He read our minds, you can say, as he talked about what other teachers will be doing or have done throughout the day. It literally blew my mind how passionate he seemed and excited for this school year even though he talked with a tone which could be misinterpreted as being monotone at some parts of his speech. The whole class seemed to be engaged and Dr. Preston knew how to keep their attention. At last, he described our options: Textbook and paper or Open Source Learning and Blogs. He used psychology to express and lead us to our option in an indirect way. His diction about each option showed that he was bias to Open Learning Source. Without a doubt, I also wanted to do something new like these "blogs". I did not want another class where I would have to carry my textbook or read from it everyday and write summaries in my dull room as the sun seemed to be gone and be replaced by her sister, the moon.

WELL THERE IS THIS SONG...

Passion

Being creative was super hard for me.
...Or at least I thought so.
I could never write a story like my companions in 4th grade. They would come up with funny stories about a socks monster and bring socks to school to throw at the audience. Sometimes, they would all bring props.
My stories were just complicated.
I struggled and struggled. And STRUGGLED. How could I ever make a story that made the students laugh.
In addition, how could I ever even speak loud and clear with confidence. I always felt my cheeks turn hot, maybe even be a little red. Then, the tears in my eyes would form and I was not even crying.

Well, Kate became a great writer. So did Goku. He is a senior now at another high school and in the Drama Club, I believe so. He was really creative as well. In 5th grade he would come over from his 6th grade class to share his stories.

Now, I open my eyes and I see many youth my age being activist, owning businesses, forming a social media platform or doing what they love.

I wonder where I am. I will admit, one of my flaws is being indecisive. I love reading of course, so I did end up buying books and eating them up as fast as I could. I also started playing the ukulele in 4th grade. I started when I was in 6th grader and now as a junior in High School, I am painting canvases with acrylics and composing songs. I also care about my community and want to educate myself more as well as get other involve.

However, Singing and music just makes me happy anyday.
Like the real meaning of HAPPY. Not just plain old boring happy, but an unexplainable Happiness.

So, I might not be Greta who is traveling all over the world to spread awareness about the Climate Change, or I might not be Shin Lim or even Kodi Lee who have won America's got talent..
but I am ME.
A little misunderstood me.
A little too curious.
A little too confused.
Perhaps a little too much.
But still, I am creative in my own way.

HOW DID I DO?

Today I had an interview.

A small note to you:

I would be pleased to have feedback on how I did on my interview.

This would be really useful because I might be having another interview soon.

With much appreciation,

Odalys Martinez

MY BRAIN ON THANKSGIVING BREAK

My Brain on Thanksgiving Break

Nine.

Days.
Of no School.

😨

How did I possibly manage to sustain my memory and learning momentum this 2019 Thanksgiving Break?

Well after long hours (during the whole week, even Saturdays and Sundays) of chores, babysitting, cooking, and spending quality time with my family and extended family, I took most (maybe fewer than most) of the afternoons for me.

Despite the work and studying I needed to do and wanted to do, I still managed to tie it in within my daily life and routines.

For example, the mornings that I was not in a rush and I was making homemade tortillas, I watched on YouTube a video or two about history (for my APUSH class) or a video about religion to help me increase my knowledge and be more prepared in these topics when I have to discuss it with my father or committee. Sometimes I rewatched the videos to go over facts and capture something I had missed before. During the day when I was trying to do some homework while watching my sisters in the living room watch T.V., I would try to do everything with one hand (such as typing or reading). My youngest is super active and loves jumping around so much. I have to lie her down and massage her feet so she can relax and watch t.v. or take a nap. This shows how I tied my daily routines to my education.

Yeah, you might probably ask why not hurry up and then afterwards concentrate fully on studying. Well, there is dead time when the tortillas are cooking and when the other meal on the side is done as well. In addition, free time, or me sitting down is not really an exception when you have three younger siblings wanting to play all day with you and fighting for your attention. I really try hard to give them my attention equally but as always the oldest gets the least and the youngest the most.

Instead of going out with my parents on Saturday's afternoon, I asked to stay home and work on some research and homework. It was great especially late at night I got to concentrate way better.
However, I did spend quality time with them on the days they ]]

Overall it was a great and I'm thankful for my family. They really are a part of me and a great motivation. They made this Thanksgiving week memorable with the many smiles and laughs we shared which made this week living for... 💖

THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR VOICE

As a 6th grader having to read my "funny" or "creative" story in front of the class as everyone did on a Friday was just a roller coaster. I would go up in front of the classroom and before I started talking, my hands got sweaty. Before I read the sentence, my eyes would water. I would stand there. Shaking. It was a feeling that I knew I was confident and could go through my whole story, but I just could not.
Now think of this: Your having a class party and the teacher asks for food options. You may not share your idea/ opinion. But if you did not get to vote, you made a choice of having others vote for you and make your decision ( at least the average - majority- select for you).
Being a shy young girl, I did not participate much. In other words, many choices were made for me or I followed the "crowd". It also made me so insecure about myself. I wanted to fit in. However, to do so, I always had everyone else go first before I did.
Now, gaining my confidence back in myself, I like starting first or volunteering first: to get over with whatever it is or simply because I feel excited and prepared and not as nervous as before. When ever I saw something wrong, I never spoke up and if I did, I was afraid. Now, I feel okay to make conversations or argue politely with anyone. I am not afraid. I am not afraid to ask questions. I am not afraid to simply be me.

THE FUTURE OF OPEN SOURCE CODE

An article about preserving data, read HERE.

(Here are my Notes I took if you want a shorter version.)

Open Source Code Will Survive the Apocalypse in an Arctic Cave

Last Stop before North Pole for civilization is Svalbard
   - Coal Mines have shut down
     > Attraction to scientist; doomsday peppers setting
         * ideal spot for a big global reset button // keeping it neutral in times of war
Place
-belongs to Svalbard Global Seed Vault: Food/ Crops are stored and grown to be preserved in
case of famine pandemic or nuclear apocalypse
   - Nat Friedman explores abandoned coal mine, metal tool shed
-Arctic World Archive (the metal tool shed)
     - Data encoded on discs - like old - school movie reels: microfilms
= Norwegian company Piqlas coats w/ iron oxide for resistance
relates to Open Source Code Will Survive the Apocalypse in an Arctic Cave
       - will last 750 years normal conditions & 2,0000 years in low- oxygen cave
Open Source Software --> Greatest Achievements (along
w/ masterpieces of art & literature)
   -* Foundation of Modern World
   - basic idea: write code & share it
     > Expands to anyone modifying it and making it their
     own
   - significant inventions, ex: nuclear powder, antibiotics,
     etc...
Microsoft making $$$ on source codes through Windows and Office
   - Lead to DIY Hacker, Torvalds, stood ground to the idea of
free speech, free access to public goods and knowledge,
      and progress itself
   - Torvalds wrote the Linux Codes (under grids the internet
   and smartphones)
    - Debate: how much control few companies have in
     tech
       - Open Source became a RULE
          - Helped Google afford to give services for us like email, maps, etc...
In addition, Torvalds wrote a program - GIT: helps manage development Linux -> GitHub
   - Github: process of codes easier --> searching for existing codes rather than starting
     from scratch
Purpose
    - not for powerful companies to get more power but for the people

Summary: Open Source Code would not have imagined as possible more than 20 years ago, let's say, 20 years before this article was published. Many companies kept their coding secret for themselves which meant everyone had to start from scratch to perfect theirs or to even start coding. Sooner than expected, open source became a rule. It was influenced by the idea of "freedom of speech, free access to public goods and knowledge, and progress itself" (Vance). As a result of codes being accessible to everyone, we now have free services from Google and other developments. The purpose was to democratize technology and for the people to explore these resources without having to ask permission or being watched. However, our new sources in the Internet like Facebook and such have been able to analyze us, the users. I think it is so interesting that Svalbard is the place where they store most of the existing coding and that it contains from different countries. It is also a spot of neutrality.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING

Have you ever gone on a mini-vacation with your family?
Perhaps you have, but have your family ever gone somewhere without plans?

There was an event on a Saturday morning. I woke up extra early that morning. My family had plans to go get some breakfast and then drive of to Santa Barbara where the event was taking place. However, that morning, I was notified that the event was cancel because our main presenter that was running the event happened to go out of the country for an emergency family situation.

My mom, sisters, and I were all in dresses as my father was in a nice polo shirt and shorts. We got in the car, and we made plans to go to Santa Barbara and just go downtown or to an attraction place. Not before we drove off, our plans changed. We were going to Santa Monica Pier.

It was the first time we had been to Santa Monica Pier. We spend the whole afternoon walking around and it was really crowed. We did some window shopping and walked around a few stores. However, it was getting late and my father wanted us to go to Downtown L.A. He was excited to show us around L.A. because my sisters and I had not really gotten the opportunity to go there due to time whenever we had gone to L.A. In addition, my dad had lived around there before. Since it was too late, we found ourselves looking for a Hotel. Every single place we had stopped was "full". We tried the casinos, the areas close to the center of LA, nothing. We just got on the highway again when I made a final call. They had a couple of rooms.

The room was in okay condition. And very dull. There was loud noises from people upstairs, music blasting from a car parked outside, and the sound of cars zooming really fast in the highway. There was even a knock in our door. As creepy as this place was, it was enough for us to wake up the next morning and go for a walk in L.A.

In comparison, we had just recently attended a Wedding in L.A. Planning ahead of time is a benefit. You pay half as much and know where to drive and where to go. I can conclude that I did enjoy my trip better in the latter story because my sisters and I used the swimming pool, and our rooms were perfect as the sun is up because we got great lighting a more seemingly clean room.

NUMEROLOGY

ATTITUDE = 100%
(Credits to Readers Digest Canada's article "These Are the Luckiest Days of the Year to Do Everything, According to Numerology" ) - Just for the Picture

Numerology - the belief in the divine or mystical relationship between a number and one or more coinciding events.

Fun Fact:
When I was in 4th - 5th grade I would carry a small journal with the Pythagorean Numerology chart. The notebook contained not just the chart, but notes from every article/ story I found online or at the Public Library. There was so few formulas written and pages full of what the numbers meant. They all added to a sum that represented love, compassion, luck and and perfect timing. For others it was how it was related to the power of a word or your name (Which is starting to remind me of Rumpelstiltskin -  and how he names his daughter Hope because each name contains power). I would observe different people, as well at school where everyone knows each other in the class, and I would use their names without telling them. I would add and solve and get numbers and in my own mind, I would know what these numbers indicated about them. In addition, I would also have dreams. I remembered these dreams came from November 2012 and in November 2013. Who knows why on the month of November, for I still wonder about it.

Now that I'm a junior in high school, I am curious to go back and look through my notes. However, I have thrown that notebook away a year or two ago because there was so much writing. I mean, whenever I found something interesting at that time, I copied whole paragraphs word by word and annotated so much in ink (imagine all the scribbles for each mistake - no, i did not think of using whiteout).

What do you think about Numerology?

TODAY'S ARGUMENT // PATHOS

          LET'S START AN ARGUMENT

You want to argue first? 💥😏

Oh, you want me to argue first?
HAHA  OHkAaayyyYY  😆@?!

WHY I ARGUED

My younger sister, Andrea
So today, I had two meetings in the afternoon.

First, I had to meet right after school with the Ag teachers and my fellow officers companions to plan ahead for our monthly meeting.

Secondly, we had a gathering for Youth Making Change in the late afternoon with my sister so we both decided to hangout at Jacks while I did some of my homework. Many topics came up, especially an interesting one not many people talk about, ... or do they?

Teens change throughout high school.

True, right? I mean it may be a slow change you do not really notice in these four years. It could be negative or positive changes.

(I agree, it is weird that teens would talk about teens in general.
So... I guess you can conclude that we are they type of weird)

When I was in middle school (junior high), I had been told by many that when you are in high school you become a different person as in an disobedience child. Many of my peers had older siblings to whom they referred to as evidence.
- "My older brother started going out so much and now he doesn't do anything at home"
- "My older sister is always getting mad and angry. It is like we have to fight about something everyday"
... and so the list goes on and on.

Now, being wearing the shoes of a high school student and eldest child in my family, I can argue that it is not all true.

MY ARGUMENT (CHECK THIS BLOG HERE AND IT'S DOWN BELOW)

LET'S START AN ARGUMENT

You want to argue first? 💥😏

Oh, you want me to argue first?
HAHA  OHkAaayyyYY  😆@?!

The main idea of this argument is how high school changes most students in many ways, specifically gives them a brighter outlook. We discussed about how students in high school become more mature.

Yes, there are many students who do not change their behavior at all. They accept their grades and stay standing to the idea that education is not worth it for them. Others ditch their classes while others go to class trolling like zombies without wanting to come back to life.

However, observing people going into relationships and facing life responsibilities such as working proves that teenagers do become more mature.

I wanted to be persuasive so I used Pathos. The reason I chose Pathos was because many other teens could relate to the relationship part. It does not have to be a boy-girlfriend relationship. It could be a best-friend relationship in which one influences the other and one realizes that they have to keep achieving more milestones even without their friends if they are not supportive.

ON SELF- RELIANCE PART III

Self- help in America alone is a billion dollars business
"Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own"

People are good.

Honoring your nature.
- still same person you were and are.

Example:
Same values as when Obama was president until today president

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK DEEP MEANING AND POV
Civil war was after this article.

Dont act like your good if your not actually good.

If something is good, lets call it out because thats what matters,
Don't overuse some words

He isn't against charity or good events
He is against about people that give and donate to look good,
He is against those who behave bad with friends and families but goes to church.
Hipocrisy

Virtues
- integrity,

ITS A SHAME: it is more common to see bad news than good news

Sometimes people aren't nice, but they make up for it by donating into charities, etc

You dont need someone to pat you in the back to say good boy or care for what others think

You will always find those who think they know more than you what you should be doing than yourself --- living others opoins

Its harder to know people because when they talk, they talk like whatever they are saying is based on a script after hearing it from somewhere else and you cant see their true themselves. They give the same points and you cant really feel if they are actually believing it. Not only do ppl stop speaking like themselves, they dont say no.
A man may have to know how to estimate a sad. sour face.

Reactions we see might hurt our feelings,
they arent really about us, the reactions are about them - what they have read, seen, or done, or discontent,

When you disagree with someone, they will wonder why? whats the difference

ppl from certain education/ temper - they will attack you , explore,

THE GAME IS BIGGER THAN THE PLAYER
Picture: Bringng ppl together to discuss - disagreement? (I don'd agree with you/ No) Simple and dry
You have two choices, either just say ok and . or ask why
Why - brings it into a conversation

ON SELF- RELIANCE PART II

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

Soliloquy-

If you choose not to decide, you still had made a choice

You don't know what you can do until you do your best.

You can't show your best, if you never try your best.

"I'm so stressed" ---> Relaxation, which then stresses us more

We feel at our best, when we put our heart into it and we acknowledge it.

Emerson talks about teenagers - sometimes they don't care
- Teenagers do not care what they do not care about. And they might let you know.
- Ex: a baby does not care when it's hungry, adults drop what they are doing, and adults have to compromise.
Babies and Rude people that don't have a filter, should teach us that is okay.
An adult is trapped by its conscious, we are always aware how others see us and our voices become faint and fainter.

FIRST IMPRESSION: ON SELF-RELIANCE

"Our acts our angels are, or good or ill"

The belief in you is worth celebrating is genius.
We have this inside voice with which we would speak with.
We should think for ourselves and not from other what we read or observe.
Many of us do not think greatly of ourselves, but we should.

How can you yourself and be someone else at the same time?
If you are good being someone else, then your true self had died.

There are many wonderful people who take the knowledge in and study it but to take action is another different story.

*Woah! It totally makes sense about being your true self or either pretending to be someone you aren't. This reminds me of a friend who wasn't sure of them self. They were going through experiences that lead to this person to say that they eventually had a mask on. After hearing this, I wondered if they even had a small part of them that was true and at least be happy. I hope they figure them self out and eventually find hope or heal spiritually because holding on to a mask could potentially end up hurting one or others. Even if they felt that they would not be heard, they should keep trying.

JUST A SMALL NOTE FOR YOU

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE SICK TO GET BETTER.

LET ME WALK YOU THROUGH THE PEDESTRAIN

In The Pedestrian Ray Bradbury theme is that in a future society everyone would be bewitched with technology. In his imagination technology had authority over humanity. Bradbury wrote The Pedestrian in 1951 as a result of letting his imagination go wild. In this short-story this guy goes for a walk and describes his surroundings. What drives the story is what is implied.
Ray Bradbury sat down and try to make sense from his experience and he wrote it into this story. His tone was lonely and sad.
The plot was a plot twist which consisted many irony moments. An example of situational irony in which the part where the police car comes by and it turns out to be a machine.
He was witty, and so he hassled.

THE PEDESTRIAN

The Pedestrian

The Pedestrian
By Ray Bradbury

The Golden Apples of the Sun by Ray Bradbury, Heinemann Educational Publishers; 1st New edition 1990)

To enter out into that silence that was the city at eight o'clock of a misty evening in November, to put your feet upon that buckling concrete walk, to step over grassy seams and make your way, hands in pockets, through the silences, that was what Mr Leonard Mead most dearly loved to do. He would stand upon the corner of an intersection and peer down long moonlit avenues of sidewalk in four directions, deciding which way to go, but it really made no difference; he was alone in this world of 2053 A.D., or as good as alone, and with a final decision made, a path selected, he would stride off, sending patterns of frosty air before him like the smoke of a cigar.
Sometimes he would walk for hours and miles and return only at midnight to his house. And on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind the windows. Sudden gray phantoms seemed to manifest upon inner room walls where a curtain was still undrawn against the night, or there were whisperings and murmurs where a window in a tomb-like building was still open.
Mr Leonard Mead would pause, cock his head, listen, look, and march on, his feet making no noise on the lumpy walk. For long ago he had wisely changed to sneakers when strolling at night, because the dogs in intermittent squads would parallel his journey with barkings if he wore hard heels, and lights might click on and faces appear and an entire street be startled by the passing of a lone figure, himself, in the early November evening.
On this particular evening he began his journey in a westerly direction, toward the hidden sea. There was a good crystal frost in the air; it cut the nose and made the lungs blaze like a Christmas tree inside; you could feel the cold light going on and off, all the branches filled with invisible snow. He listened to the faint push of his soft shoes through autumn leaves with satisfaction, and whistled a cold quiet whistle between his teeth, occasionally picking up a leaf as he passed, examining its skeletal pattern in the infrequent lamplights as he went on, smelling its rusty smell.
'Hello, in there,' he whispered to every house on every side as he moved. 'What's up tonight on Channel 4, Channel 7, Channel 9? Where are the cowboys rushing, and do I see the United States Cavalry over the next hill to the rescue?'
The street was silent and long and empty, with only his shadow moving like the shadow of a hawk in mid-country. If he closed his eyes and stood very still, frozen, he could imagine himself upon the center of a plain, a wintry, windless Arizona desert with no house in a thousand miles, and only dry river beds, the street, for company.
'What is it now?' he asked the houses, noticing his wrist watch. Eight-thirty P.M.? Time for a dozen assorted murders? A quiz? A revue? A comedian falling off the stage?'
Was that a murmur of laughter from within a moon-white house? He hesitated, but went on when nothing more happened. He stumbled over a particularly uneven section of sidewalk. The cement was vanishing under flowers and grass. In ten years of walking by night or day, for thousands of miles, he had never met another person walking, not one in all that time.
He came to a cloverleaf intersection which stood silent where two main highways crossed the town. During the day it was a thunderous surge of cars, the gas stations open, a great insect rustling and a ceaseless jockeying for position as the scarab-beetles, a faint incense puttering from their exhausts, skimmed homeward to the far directions. But now these highways, too, were like streams in a dry season, all stone and bed and moon radiance.
He turned back on a side street, circling around toward his home. He was within a block of his destination when the lone car turned a corner quite suddenly and flashed a fierce white cone of light upon him. He stood entranced, not unlike a night moth, stunned by the illumination, and then drawn toward it.
A metallic voice called to him:
'Stand still. Stay where you are! Don't move!'
He halted.
'Put up your hands!'
'But-' he said.
'Your hands up! Or we'll shoot!'
The police, of course, but what a rare, incredible thing; in a city of three million, there was only one police car left, wasn't that correct? Ever since a year ago, 2052, the election year, the force had been cut down from three cars to one. Crime was ebbing; there was no need now for the police, save for this one lone car wandering and wandering the empty streets.
'Your name?' said the police car in a metallic whisper. He couldn't see the men in it for the bright light in his eyes.
'Leonard Mead,' he said.
'Speak up!'
'Leonard Mead!'
Business or profession?'
'I guess you'd call me a writer.'
No profession,' said the police car, as if talking to itself. The light held him fixed, like a museum specimen, needle thrust through chest.
'You might say that,' said Mr Mead.
He hadn't written in years. Magazines and books didn't sell anymore. Everything went on in the tomb-like houses at night now, he thought, continuing his fancy. The tombs, ill-lit by television light, where the people sat like the dead, the gray or multi-colored lights touching their faces, but never really touching them.
'No profession,' said the phonograph voice, hissing. 'What are you doing out?'
'Walking,' said Leonard Mead.
'Walking!'
'Just walking,' he said simply, but his face felt cold.
'Walking, just walking, walking?'
'Yes, sir.'
'Walking where? For what?'
'Walking for air. Walking to see.'
'Your address!'
'Eleven South Saint James Street.'
'And there is air in your house, you have an air conditioner, Mr Mead?'
Yes.'
'And you have a viewing screen in your house to see with?'
'No.
'No?' There was a crackling quiet that in itself was an accusation.
'Are you married, Mr Mead?'
'No.'
'Not married,' said the police voice behind the fiery beam. The moon was high and dear among the stars and the houses were gray and silent.
'Nobody wanted me,' said Leonard Mead with a smile.
'Don't speak unless you're spoken to!'
Leonard Mead waited in the cold night.
'Just walking; Mr Mead?'
'Yes.'
But you haven't explained for what purpose.'
'I explained; for air, and to see, and just to walk.'
'Have you done this often?'
Every night for years.'
The police car sat in the center of the street with its radio throat faintly humming.
'Well, Mr Mead', it said.
''s that all?' he asked politely.
'Yes,' said the voice. 'Here.' There was a sigh, a pop. The back doot of the police car sprang wide. 'Get in.'
'Wait a minute, 1 haven't done anything!'
'Get in.'
'I protest!'
'Mr Mead.'
He walked like a man suddenly drunk. As he passed the front window of the car he looked in. As he had expected, there was no one in the front seat, no one in the car at all.
'Get in.'
He put his hand to the door and peered into the back seat, which was a little cell, a little black jail with bars. It smelled of riveted steel. It smelled of harsh antiseptic; it smelled too clean and hard and metallic. There was nothing soft there.
'Now if you had a wife to give you an alibi,' said the iron voice. 'But-'
Uhere are you taking me?'
The car hesitated, or rather gave a faint whirring click, as if information, somewhere, was dropping card by punch- slotted card under electric eyes. 'To the Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies.'
He got in. The door shut with a soft thud. The police car rolled through the night avenues, flashing its dim lights ahead.
They passed one house on one street a moment later, one house in an entire city of houses that were dark, but this one particular house had all of its electric lights brightly lit, every window a loud yellow illumination, square and warm in the cool darkness.
'That's my house,' said Leonard Mead.
No one answered him.
The car moved down the empty riverbed streets and off away, leaving the empty streets with the empty sidewalks, and no sound and no motion all the rest of the chill November night.

HAWTHORNE & POE ON DRREAMS

MY DREAM WITHIN A DREAM

IMPRESSION OF A DREAM

Time does really go by quick : Relatable
We made think we lost it all, but a dream can give us an allusion to think we got it all.
We sometimes have extremely good dreams, so great that we just do not want to wake up.

I feel like some dreams are the best.  But not so often do I have one.
More school work, more homework, more things to do.
Every night when I go to sleep the only thing on my mind is the worries about the next day.
(Except on holidays and Friday nights)
I usually am so tired I don't struggle to fall asleep.
If I do fall asleep earlier than I intend to, I panic as I know I couldn't stop time.
Only if time could be still...
